When you are hungry nothing else matters.

That is a simple message that the Heroes vs Hunger programs of Eblen Charities and our wonderful partners have been sharing with our community for more than three years.

In that brief time, and in partnership with Arby’s, Ingles, the Brumit Restaurant Group, Pepsi, and others, more than one million meals have been distributed to area children so they would not have to face hunger at home while away from school.

One of Eblen’s strongest and flagship programs, Hoops Against Hunger began at the Southern Conference Basketball Championships in 2015 and have grown to lead the fight against children’s hunger in western North Carolina. Each year additional outreach has been added to the Ingles SOCON Championship weekend and this year we are honored to announce a new program of Hoops Against Hunger that will help feed thousands of children in our community.

We are happy to be announce that all nine of the SOCON Team Host Hotels are joining Hoops Against Hunger in participating in the Hotel Challenge this year as they collect food from their employees and guests. Participating host hotels are the Biltmore Hilton, Biltmore Double Tree, the AC Hotel, the Renaissance, the Cambria, Four Points, Hyatt Place, Crowne Plaza, Hampton Inn & Suites, and the Hilton Garden Inn.

Two winners will be announced and trophies will be awarded for the total amount of pounds of food collected and food collected per pound per hotel room. Each winning hotel receives 30 tickets for staff to the SoCon Men’s Championship Game Monday, March 11th at 7PM

The collection bins will remain in the hotels through the tournament – Monday March 11th. Anyone who donates a food item will receive a $5 voucher for SoCon game tickets. Hotels are encouraged to promote food donation to guests. Vouchers will be provided to the hotels before 2/15.

SUGGESTED FOOD LIST

Cereal, Peanut Butter, Crackers, Can Fruit,
Shelf Stable Dinners, (like frozen dinners but found on shelves)
Canned Meat (Tuna, Chicken, etc..) Cheese Crackers, Ramen Noodles,
Instant Oatmeal, Granola Bars, Quick Mac & Cheese, Pudding Cups, Pop-Tarts

One out of five children do not have enough food at home, many times the only meals they receive at school is the only food they will have to eat and when the holidays or other times away from school arrive, far too many face the chance of going hungry until they are back in class. Hoops Against Hunger along with Headlock on Hunger, Huddle Against Hunger, and Heroes vs Hunger help ensure that no child in our community has to face hunger while away from school.

“The Southern Conference Basketball Championships bring so much excitement to town -and have brought our community together in many ways over the years. We are so proud of our hotel partners for accepting the Hoops Against Hunger Hotel Challenge to help fight hunger in western North Carolina.”states Carli Adams of Explore Asheville.

“We can’t begin to thank everyone who has helped Hoops Against Hunger begin ad grow these past few years,” adds Bill Murdock, executive director of Eblen Charities. “We are honored and most grateful to the Southern Conference and our host hotels for their great kindness in not only bringing the championships to Asheville but to reach out to so many of our families who are facing hunger here at home.”
